Ubuntu Netbook Edition – fine for web browsing

Ubuntu Logo A short while ago I wrote about the Novatech X10, its a low cost netbook PC that you can choose to be delivered to you without Windows pre installed. However if you don’t have Windows you need some other operating system – that’s where Ubuntu Netbook Edition comes in.

Designed for small screened and low performance notebook PCs (commonly known as netbooks) this edition of Ubuntu Linux is designed to make it quick and easy to get you surfing the web, listening to music and typing up your next letter to your aunt.

Its freely available from the Ubuntu website (link) and while it won’t run any Windows programs (and I do mean any) it is a great low cost alternative to spending an extra £35 on Windows 7 and includes all the programs you would use a netbook for anyway.

A netbook without Windows from Novatech

The X10 Netbook without Windows If you are not a fan of Windows XP or Windows 7 Starter and are looking for a free alternative operating system (like the Ubuntu Netbook Remix) then you will probably be hoping to also save on the price of your new netbook too.
However since almost every PC these days comes with a version of Windows preinstalled it can be difficult to find something that meets this requirement; but, with the Novatech X10 netbook (in black or white) you get the choice to have the PC shipped without Windows and so get the massive cost saving.

A all new Touch Screen netbook from Samsung

Samsung NB30 Touch from Laptops Direct Its been becoming pretty hard for anyone to come up with a original design for a netbook with most manufacturers going with a Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and Windows 7 starter edition.

However Samsung have turned the tables on that idea by adding a touch screen to its NB30 netbook.

With a 10.1” touch screen you can start to interact with your PC in new ways, instead of fiddling around with a tiny track pad (like on most netbooks) just reach out and tap on that photo that you want to bring up – Samsung have even included some nifty software to browse your photos and music with ease.

While you may expect such technology to be expensive its really not with a price tag of only £369.987 from Laptops Direct (link).

Windows 7 Starter – What’s that?

Windows 7 Starter for Netbooks Only a year or two ago we saw the birth of the first generation of ‘Netbooks’, these mini PCs used low powered processors had 7” screens and battery lives of over 4 hours. They were great; however, this was the time of Windows Vista which wasn’t suited to such low powered machines and so manufactures turned to custom made Linux operating systems and Windows XP.

All this changed with Windows 7 and the all new ‘Starter Edition’.

Windows 7 Starter Edition appears almost identical to other Windows 7 editions (e.g. Home Premium/Professional) and includes many of the best features of Windows 7 such as Aero Snap and Instant Search.

What it is missing (and what makes it starter edition) is the lack of the fancy 3D/Transparency effects, Media Centre (there’s still Media Player), and the support for 64bit processing and touch screens. But then when you consider that your £300 netbook won’t have a processor suited to these features anyway it all makes sense.

Stylish Samsung hits the cyber shelves

Samsung N310Samsung have been one of the leaders of the netbook market (with the NC10) and now they have expanded their range to the NC310. Whereas most netbook designers don’t put much into the overall look and feel of the device Samsung certainly are with their latest £377.20 (Amazon) netbook line.

You get the usual netbook specification with a Intel Atom 1.6ghz processor, 160GB hard drive and Windows XP. One unusual (but positive) point is that you get 1GB of 800mhz RAM, meaning you can expect faster boot-ups than you would from most netbooks. Read the rest of this entry »
