A big leap forwards in Mini PCs – Novatech nBox
For a long time truly compact PCs have been something that only businesses have had access to but now with the Novatech nBox that’s all changed. Compact in every way (so much so its compatible with VESA mounts for the back of a PC screen) this tiny PC also comes with a very basic specification including a single core Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive.
Although basic in design this PC is capable of taking on light tasks like web browsing, playing music (you will need a USB DVD drive with this PC as it doesn’t have one built in) and word processing.
As you might expect this PC also comes with a small price tag of just £229 with Windows XP Home Edition.
New from HP – low cost and built for simplicity
If you are new to PCs or just looking for something simple then HP has the thing for you in the new HP/Compaq CQ2510.
Priced at a mere £199 from HP direct (link) this PC comes with only the bare basics including Windows XP and a single core Intel Atom processor. Designed for nothing more than internet browsing, word processing and playing DVDs this PC is simplicity in a box.
A keyboard and mouse are included in the package so all you need is a monitor to get going, HP also include the standard 1 year warranty with the option to extend it further if needed.
As well as a DVD drive this PC comes with a memory card reader meaning its easy to move photos off your digital camera and into an email with ease.
This PC also comes with a 160GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM so multi tasking with light applications (Internet Explorer/Word) shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
Compact and with plenty of bite
With a 11.6” LED backlit screen and weighing in at 1.5kg the Samsung X125 notebook PC is pretty much like every other ultralight PC on the market; however its got a AMD Athlon Neo II processor.
This extra performance boost (over the standard Intel Atom processor) pushes this PC into a world of HD entertainment while still keeping the price to a low £362.00 from Samsung Laptop (link).
3GB of DDR3 RAM makes this PC fast for loading applications and there’s plenty of onboard storage in the 320GB hard drive. Windows 7 Home Premium is also included along with a host of multimedia features like onboard memory card reader, HDMI port and ATI Radon HD graphics.
14” slimline Notebook PC with HD power
If you are looking for a portable PC that leaves you with plenty of space on the screen but without a burning hole in your pocket you maybe interested in the MSI X series from Laptops Direct (link).
With a price of around £379.97 this series comes with a Intel Core2Solo processor which is plenty for taking on all your everyday applications like internet browsing, working with documents and playing music.
This PC also comes with onboard HD capable graphics and even a HDMI port so you can play smooth HD video onto any TV or screen with a HDMI port.
A netbook without Windows from Novatech
If you are not a fan of Windows XP or Windows 7 Starter and are looking for a free alternative operating system (like the Ubuntu Netbook Remix) then you will probably be hoping to also save on the price of your new netbook too.
However since almost every PC these days comes with a version of Windows preinstalled it can be difficult to find something that meets this requirement; but, with the Novatech X10 netbook (in black or white) you get the choice to have the PC shipped without Windows and so get the massive cost saving.
A all new Touch Screen netbook from Samsung
Its been becoming pretty hard for anyone to come up with a original design for a netbook with most manufacturers going with a Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and Windows 7 starter edition.
However Samsung have turned the tables on that idea by adding a touch screen to its NB30 netbook.
With a 10.1” touch screen you can start to interact with your PC in new ways, instead of fiddling around with a tiny track pad (like on most netbooks) just reach out and tap on that photo that you want to bring up – Samsung have even included some nifty software to browse your photos and music with ease.
While you may expect such technology to be expensive its really not with a price tag of only £369.987 from Laptops Direct (link).
Not a Netbook but a Ultraportable – AMD Athlon Neo
Ever since Asus launched the very fist ‘EEE PC’ people have been looking on with awe at the mini ‘netbook’ style PCs. However the Intel Atom processor (which is featured in most netbooks) just can’t handle a world where the web is becoming filled with processor intensive flash applications.
Lucky AMD has come along with the Athlon Neo processor which has been combined with the ATI Radon HD3200 graphics core ultimately making a capable and powerful PC without the normal restrictions of a netbook.
One such ‘Ultraportable’ that has just been released is the Lenovo ThinkPad x100e.
Built with business in mind (but also a great option for students looking for a portable PC) the x100e certainly ‘raises the bar’ with its £403.96 (Laptops Direct) price tag and 5 hour battery life.
Thin and light but not lacking features
Thin and light notebooks have the wonderful advantage of being highly portable, although in some cases this also means some of the extra features (like a HDMI port) are missed out. However with the Toshiba Satellite Pro T130-14Q that statement couldn’t be further away from the truth if it tried.
Weighing in at 1.8kg and sold by Laptops Direct (link) for £599.97 this ultralight PC includes all the great features (including a 11 hour battery life) that you could need to work anywhere in the world.
Light as a 780g feather – VAIO X series
If a 1.3kg netbook isn’t light enough for you then maybe you should take a quick look at the Vaio X series which uses a 11.1” screen and weights a ridiculously light 780g!
With Windows 7 Professional, and cutting edge technology such as the latest Intel Atom Processor, solid state disk drive, multi touch track pad and built in 3G mobile internet this latest Vaio is a perfect demonstration of the finest mobile technology humanity has ever created.
As you might expect there’s a hefty price tag of £1,299 but that’s with a free 2 year warranty from John Lewis (link).
The Thin Ultralight from Toshiba
There’s always something quite fascinating about ultralight notebooks, for me I think its the fact that an entire PC can be put into such a small package. This is fascination is certainly true with the Toshiba T110-11U which has a 11.6” screen and weighs in at 1.58kg.
Currently selling at Comet (link) for £419.99 and with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit edition this is by far one of the lowest priced ultralights seen on the site for a long time.
Even at this price Toshiba have managed to include some of the latest technology such as N class Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Multi Touch track pad, a HDMI port and a built in webcam + microphone with face recognition.
Novatech mini PCs – Definitive guide
Novatech (and many other retailers) have cued onto the fact that fact that mini PCs have big potential for all those who just want to browse the internet, watch DVDs and store photos (plus all the everyday tasks people ultimately use PCs for). With this they released the Ion range with a total of 3 different options to choose from.

Less weight same features – Lenovo U
Thin and ultralight notebooks are great if you are always on the road or just don’t want to carry around 3kg with you every day and at just 1.6kg the Lenovo U350 (£536.97) certainly fits into that category.
With an energy efficient Intel Core Solo processor and 13.3” LED backlight screen you can expect a battery life of around 4 hours while still getting all the performance you need to work with photos and videos.
