A big leap forwards in Mini PCs – Novatech nBox
For a long time truly compact PCs have been something that only businesses have had access to but now with the Novatech nBox that’s all changed. Compact in every way (so much so its compatible with VESA mounts for the back of a PC screen) this tiny PC also comes with a very basic specification including a single core Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive.
Although basic in design this PC is capable of taking on light tasks like web browsing, playing music (you will need a USB DVD drive with this PC as it doesn’t have one built in) and word processing.
As you might expect this PC also comes with a small price tag of just £229 with Windows XP Home Edition.

A netbook without Windows from Novatech
If you are not a fan of Windows XP or Windows 7 Starter and are looking for a free alternative operating system (like the Ubuntu Netbook Remix) then you will probably be hoping to also save on the price of your new netbook too.
However since almost every PC these days comes with a version of Windows preinstalled it can be difficult to find something that meets this requirement; but, with the Novatech X10 netbook (in black or white) you get the choice to have the PC shipped without Windows and so get the massive cost saving.
A all new Touch Screen netbook from Samsung
Its been becoming pretty hard for anyone to come up with a original design for a netbook with most manufacturers going with a Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and Windows 7 starter edition.
However Samsung have turned the tables on that idea by adding a touch screen to its NB30 netbook.
With a 10.1” touch screen you can start to interact with your PC in new ways, instead of fiddling around with a tiny track pad (like on most netbooks) just reach out and tap on that photo that you want to bring up – Samsung have even included some nifty software to browse your photos and music with ease.
While you may expect such technology to be expensive its really not with a price tag of only £369.987 from Laptops Direct (link).
Is a ‘Netbook’ right for you?
If you are buying a new portable PC and think you want a netbook (compared to a notebook) then you may want to check up on a few points first such as performance, screen size and operating system to ensure that you are making the right choice.
To help you on the way read on for a quick guide on the differences between the two.
Windows 7 Starter – What’s that?
Only a year or two ago we saw the birth of the first generation of ‘Netbooks’, these mini PCs used low powered processors had 7” screens and battery lives of over 4 hours. They were great; however, this was the time of Windows Vista which wasn’t suited to such low powered machines and so manufactures turned to custom made Linux operating systems and Windows XP.
All this changed with Windows 7 and the all new ‘Starter Edition’.
Windows 7 Starter Edition appears almost identical to other Windows 7 editions (e.g. Home Premium/Professional) and includes many of the best features of Windows 7 such as Aero Snap and Instant Search.
What it is missing (and what makes it starter edition) is the lack of the fancy 3D/Transparency effects, Media Centre (there’s still Media Player), and the support for 64bit processing and touch screens. But then when you consider that your £300 netbook won’t have a processor suited to these features anyway it all makes sense.
